Secondhand Love by Pete Townshend

“For the love of God, Sherlock. Have some decency,” she stated tersely, grabbing at the man’s sleeve and clenching her little fist tight around the fabric. “At least look at me when you pass me on the street!”

When the man turned to face her, any other comment she had died on her tongue as her jaw clamped shut. Even though their features were strikingly similar, one second glance at the man made it blatantly obvious that he was not Sherlock Holmes. An impressive coincidence, perhaps, but certainly not the same person and not warranting of her frustration.

“Oh my God, I’m. I’m so sorry,” she blurted out, retracting her hand as if it were scalded by his wool coat, tucking it back to her chest where she wrung both of her hands guiltily. “I. I mistook you for someone else. I mean. Obviously, otherwise I wouldn’t have said those things. Just, please-”

“It’s quite alright,” the man interrupted her, his voice a low rumble that caught her off guard with how calm it was. “This actually isn’t the first time this has happened to me today.”

“Oh?” she asked, lowering her hands a bit and settling them closer to her pockets. “What happened?”

“A graying DI punched me in the face.” The man’s smile was surprisingly infectious, and she found herself giggling in spite of her initial embarrassment. “As you can imagine, he was much more apologetic.”

“A bit strange isn’t it, for bad luck to get stuck in a mug?” he offered jokingly, knowing that the young woman’s assumptions were undoubtedly warranted, even if her experience did seem to be a strange one. “I would imagine my company would be a more likely culprit.”

“I don’t think so… It wouldn’t be you. It’s just an accident.” Moving to sit back down a moment later, she picked up her own mug, being sure to be careful with it as she took another sip from it. “What was it you were saying before all of that happened?”

“I understand the whole happy-coincidence theory,” he said to the woman across the the table from him, doing his utmost to remain polite in spite of his surprise, “but it seems to fail at holding water when this continues to happen.”

“It never normally does it at all. It only ever seems to happen to you.” Reaching for a tea towel, she wiped up the worse off of the table before collecting another from the drawer for him to use to wipe himself down. “Maybe I should just throw out that mug all together.”

“Everyone has someone to tell. Much as your offer may be honest, it is not likely to be maintained.”

“There isn’t anyone really. No one would listen to me even if I tried to say something.”

“You know that I’m here. That’s troublesome for the both of us.”

“I won’t tell anyone if that’s what you need. I don’t mind not saying anything.”
